The Polar Climate Change: Driving Processes, ExtremeEvents, and Global Linkages were held at the international exchange center of hohai university from oct 23 to oct 24. The meeting was organized by the College of Oceanology (Hohai University), the Key Laboratory of Coastal Disaster and Defence(Hohai University), and the Jiangsu Society and Oceanology and Limnology. The symposium was co-chaired by professor Zhaomin Wang of the College of Oceanology (Hohai University), professor Xiangdong Zhang of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, professor John Turner of the British Antarctic Bureau, and Annette Rinke, senior fellow of the Alfred Wegener Institute For Polar and Marine Research. Professor Zhaomin Wang presided over the opening ceremony, and Hohai University President Hui Xu attended and addressed the opening ceremony.
This international symposium focuses on three topics:
1)Polar Climate Change and its Global Linkages
2)Polar Climate and Weather Extremes and Disastrous Ice Conditions
3)Polar Ocean Circulation and Ocean-Ice-Atmosphere Interactions
In the seminar, Yihui Ding, researcher of the national climate center and academician of the Chinese academy of engineering, made a report entitled Relationship between the Arctic climate change and winter extreme events in Eurasia and China. Dake Chen, researcher at the Second Institute of Oceanography and academician of the Chinese academy of sciences, made a report entitled Rationale and design of the Southern Ocean appealing System. The two academicians' report is rich in content and excellent in speech, which has aroused heated responses from the delegates.
During the conference, more than 150 international and domestic famous polar and global change research experts and scholars participated in the conference, and conducted 43 reports, 16 wall papers and 3 discussions according to the topics. The multi-perspective reports have deepened the understanding of the participants on the causes of polar climate change and extreme events, and discussed how to improve the forecasting capacity of polar climate change and extreme events. Domestic and foreign scholars have conducted extensive exchanges and discussions on the latest research results, future development trends and cooperation plans. The meeting is of great significance for our university to grasp the future priority of research and promote international cooperation and exchanges.
